Blackmagic Disk Speed Test App Reviews

Does Not Work

Like many other reviews I will state it once again. This current update does not work, I’ve tried launching multiple times and it crashes. Currently running Mac OS Sierra this could be the problem.

Working fine on i7 Retina iMac

Maybe Blackmagic updated this software in the last few days, but I had no issues running it just now on an late 2014 i7 Retina iMac. Have used this in the past and this version worked just as well as it always has.

Works fine on MBP 13” (Early 2015) with macOS Sierra 10.12

Works perfectly fine, and was great at verifying which drive/connection combo bottleneck was the worst, and what to expect from others. I used it on the internal SSD, a SanDisk 960 GB SATA III SSD using an Apricorn USB 3.0 to SATA connection, an Addonics 5-disk array in RAID 5, and a WD 4 TB HDD in a USB 3.0 connected external enclosure.

Working on mid-2014 MacBook Pro Retina

I just downloaded this to test a USB flash drive’s speed and it is working just fine.

works great on 2012 macbook pro 13inch

as title. Works great

Works as intended

I encountered no issues whatsoever using BM for a disk speed read on newer MBP.

Will not open

In case Blackmagic Design hasnt yet noticed, here is yet another confirmation that version 3.0 will *not* boot. (Im running OS 10.8.5 on an i7 Mac.) As far as I can see, there is no mention of Disk Speed Test on Blackmagics website, and I can find no download source for a previous version that would actually run. The app is free and Id rather not leave a one-star review, but there is no way to run it.

Crash

It crashed on my i7 5K iMac immediately after opening.

Works just fine

Works fine on my new iMac 21” with SSD drive. Didnt open the first time I ran it, but after the 2nd tiime, it opens and runs as advertised.

How to run yhis application

You have to run this application from the Applications section of Finder, NOT from the Open icon in the App Store.

It WORKS...

Not sure what the issue is with all the users claiming this app does not work or start up; but when I start it from the apps folder it works and works very well.

Works fine on 2011 MBP

Downloaded and launched from Apps folder and runs nicely, with informative results.

Needs update for late 2016 Macbook Pro

Can’t really blame Blackmagic, but it maxes out at 2,000 MB/s. Runs great on my new Macbook Pro 15” (late 2016), but the write score is at around 1,950MB/s, and read just hits the limit at 2,000 MB/s. Would be nice to see how fast it can get!

Think I know what the problem is for some people

When this app is first launched you may have to seelct a folder for the test files on the disk you want to test. For my boot volume, I had to create a new folder and then use finder’s get-info to turn on R/W permissions for all on the test folder. Then it was fine. The app and its GUI could be better. I’d suggest that the app show the list of drives/volumes you could test, it could flag if they lack space for test files or need permissions opened. When it runs it should clearly show A. That it’s running (all it does is gray out the gear icon and occasionally it updates the speed measured values), B. Which drive/volume it’s working on. In fact, it could show a table of all drives tested and their values. It could offer a checkbox next to each for you to indicate which volumes to test. This could work for network “drives” as well. It would be a nice added step if it showed the name/model reported for each drive in the table, show the published specs for the drive, and then let you see in the table further drives of same or greater capacity, their prices on Amazon and other sellers, and then links to buy. Purchases through the links would benefit the app publisher. The main point would be that this tool could be a real world system upgrade planning tool.

Not working in MacOS Sierra

The app starts and closes before showing GUI in Sierra. I am using Macbook Air. I do not want to give a 1 start rating. But the app is not working for me.

Good. With 2 or 3 minro tweaks it could be great.

Great that this app exists in Mac OS. Simple suggestions to make it 5 stars: 1)Write the name of the disk being / just been tested to the screen! you can take a screen shot, but what disk did you just test? if you have 3 or 4 drives in a system, you have no idea which one the results are for. Bonus points: integrate a drop down menu with the local disk partition names right into the gui. 2) When the test is running, change the START button to STOP, so that no one has to read the manual to know that you can do that. 3) Add a history feature (for guidance see the internet speedtest.net iOS app) so that one can observe changes over time. “Hey, that disk was super fast 5 months ago, and I think it’s getting slower”. even just having the read/write speeds with the date/time and the disk you ran it on in a list would be extremely helpful. Hell, I’d pay somewhere between $1-4 for that app. surely you could write a tiny xml file someplace and have a little display or txt output feature to export the basic results. thanks! hope these help.

Tried to download, cannot find it, will not run

I have one week old iMac (November 2016). OS Sierra 10.12.1 — a 4GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 27-inch 5K retina display, 16GB DDR3 with a 1tb OEM SSD. Wanted to test my WD My Book Pro 16Tb over Thunderbolt 2. Clicked download for the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test software on the App Store. It seemed to download. Clicked Open on the app button. Nothing happens. Cannot find the software in the download folder, app folder or the utility folder. Something is shady when as many reviews rate it as 1-star as rate it with 5-stars.

Not Working

App quits immediately. Cannot open. Trash.

Simple to operate, but not intuitive.

To set which disk to test, click on the gear button just above the start button. When selecting your internal drive, navigate to your user folder; otherwise, you will get the “selected location is read only” error. Since Blackmagic could’ve stated these in the Disk Speed Test help file, I knocked a star off.

Not a simple benchmark

I just wanted a speed measurement of my new super-duper flash drive, SSD, and hard drive. But: A. BlackMagic wont even fit on my MBP screen, I had to connect an external monitor to see the whole window. B. It never finishes, never gives an answer, just continuously changing numbers C. the Start button doesnt even change to Stop, so you have no idea its never going to finish running. D. it may be fine for someone doing video, but Id guess 95% dont care about that and just want speed numbers. There has got to be something better if you want to measure speed of your drives. Im still looking.
