Blackmagic Disk Speed Test App Reviews

It DOES work…

For those who complain about the read-only issue: right click on the drive or device in question, select “get info” and go down to the very bottom and grant read-write access to “everyone” and the test will run just fine. Make sure you reset your “everyone” back to read-only when finished. Standard results that I’ve tested are: USB 2.0 = ~33 Mbps SATA II = ~33 Mbps WD MyCloud (1 Gbps connection) = ~40 Mbps USB 3.0 = 100 or greater Mbps depending on device quality Internal SATA III HD = ~100 Mbps Internal SATA III SSD = ~500 Mbps These are all in-line with industry expected results.

"How Fast" is in FPS

These are in the provided help docs, but the START is a START/STOP button, the "Gear" button configures the location of the DiskSpeedTestTemp file and the test file size, and the "How Fast" matrix of results are measured in Frames Per Second (FPS).

Tested my new microSD card. Works well. Thanks!

I’m not sure why people are giving this such a low rating. It works well and it’s simple. I was able to tell the read / write speed of my micros card. Thanks!

Good and Useful App

This is App is usefull for figuring out if your storage device will be able to playback and/or capture video at certain quality levels and in certain formats. The interface is overly-simple but the included manual, available under the Help menu, provides clear information about how to use the tool and how to interpret the results. All numbers represent frames-per-second counts in the various formats in the results chart. The other chart is self-explanatory. You must click the ‘Start’ button a second time to end the test or it will continue indefinitely. A major opportunity area would be to redesign the interface in a way that eliminated the need for the manual. Some better labeling and mouse-over information popups might be one way to go about it.

It works.

Not sure about all the other reviews about not knowing how this program works or whatnot but I’m guessing it’s NOT intuitive. But, first off, this app works and I’m guessing it works as advertised (showing read/write speeds). As to how accurate it is, that remains to be seen. For me, I am able to verify my SD card’s R/W speeds with the SD card’s claims. Now, for those who are having a hard time using this app, FIRST you need to select a drive. How? Click FILE and then SELECT TARGET DRIVE. Alternatively, click on the little cog icon in the center of the app above the START button. To start the test, click on START. If you want to stop the test, click START again. I understand this isn’t exclusively stated but that’s how the app works. There’s a bunch of info underneath the gauges and I wish I could disable that as all I’m interested in are the R/W speeds and nothing more. I’m using this in my MBPr and using it as a data drive and nothing too intensive. I’m giving this 3-stars only because of the START button not reflecting STOP when the test is running as well. I’m guessing this R/W test is only performing a redamentary R/W test and nothing too specific. If you need something more indepth, I think you’ll need another app. Other than that, this app works as advertised (showing R/W speeds of a given drive).

Doesn’t show real life performance

The app is free and that is the only good thing about it. It doesn’t do random disk speed testing and takes up atleast 1GB space during testing which is super inconvinient for pen drives. Please fix this.

Make sure to select a place in the directory structure you can write to...

For all those having “Read-only” problems, all you should need to do is to navigate down to a point in the directory structure where you know that you have full read-write privileges. So, if you want to try testing the OS boot drive, navigate down to your home directory, and you should be done. If there are other volumes you want to test, you need to make sure you do so in a place in the respective directory structure where you have full read/write privileges. That said, this tool only seems to test sequential I/O, not random I/O. And it gave me some wildly varying numbers (like, by a factor of two) on my internal SSD, as well as other devices I tried it on. Finally, I also have iStat Menus and LittleSnitch Network Monitor installed, and while BlackMagic was doing the disk testing, I didn’t see a single blip in the disk I/O or network I/O meters, which tells me that something really strange is going on. I’m going to try some other disk benchmarking tools that will hopefully include random I/O as well as sequential I/O, and see how that works out.

Stopped working...

I updated to this new version and now the program doesnt launch and stopped working altogether.

it wont open

today when i got update this and wont open it keep shut after i click what bugger are ?? thank please fix this

Latest update doesnt allow app to launch

Programmers and developers tend to believe theyre somehow smarter than the rest of us.. Yet, many do the dumbest things.. Things the rest of us wouldnt even think of doing (or not doing)… Such as, not even test their own app after theyve updated it. Shameful.

Doesnt Launch

How embarrassing ...

Works for me!

Not sure what people are complaining about. Works on my 2011 MBA, and 2014 MBPR.

V3.0 works for me on 10.11.6 - works as advertised

Seems some others have had problems getting 3.0 to launch after update. I just downloaded and it ran fine. Suggest anyone having trouble delete the app completely and reinstall. The app itself is very minimal being focused on determining if specific drives or drive chains are actually fast enough to be used by various forms of real time raw video capture. It does that quite neatly which gives it a 3 star in my book. Add another star for its in-app help, something lacking in far to many apps these days. FYI: I dont give reviewed app either a 1-star or 5-star. I shoot for a bell curve. Most apps should get a 3-star, competent, fuctional but not exceptional.

Wont launch

Immediately quits with the dreaded "quit unexpectedly" box popping up. Running 10.6.8.

waste of time does not work

When I launch it it disappears - shoddy work

Just installed and its not working

When try to launch it the icon bounces but nothing more. No display, no message, nothing.

Works fine under 10.11.6

Just ran a test on a new external drive and the app works as expected. No problems. I took 1 star off for a confusing UI and the necessity to first read the pdf Help file to understand what to do.

same as everyone else, doesn

2012 MBP, ... core i5.. 10.6.8.... and my machine is extremely lean, not bogged down with loads of apps, programs,... nothing running in the background outside of the OS itself machine meets all the supposed compatibility requirements, but like most all the other reviews here, it DOES NOT WORK... it immediately "quits unexpectedly" when you try to open it.... downloaded, app didnt work... so deleted and re-downloaded and its still completely non-functional

Newest Update BREAKS app

Used for years, and now this update BREAKS APP and now it WONT launch…. DO NOT UPDATE

After 3.0 upgrade, doesnt boot on Mac OS 10.8.5

After 3.0 upgrade, doesnt boot on.Mac OS 10.8.5. So far the marjority of reviewers are saying the same thing. Luckily I have an older version to revert to… but irritating and now Ive lost confidence in this app.
